Most mothers progress more rapidly in familiar surroundings, using comfort measures for relaxation learned in advance or suggested by the doula.
During this period mothers have found the following suggestions helpful:
1. Walk as much as possible, because this appers to shorten labor and reduce pain.
2. If the membranes are not ruptured, a warm bath can help you remain more relaxed. However, early in labor a warm bath may slow labor; in late labor a bath may increase dilation. If the membranes are ruptured, a shower is preferable becuse of the risk of infection.
3. Change postions at least every half hour.
4. Drink plenty of liquids (fruit juices, soup) and eat light foods if recommended by your doctor. Urinate frequntly.
